Types of jobs

Postings fall into a few tracks with different rules. Faculty positions — tenure-track and teaching/instructional — run on an academic hiring calendar, often with fall postings for the following year, and expect a cover letter, CV, statements on teaching and (for tenure-track) scholarship, and later a campus visit with a job talk. University staff positions (professional, technical, administrative, and facilities roles) post year-round and hire faster. Limited-term and temporary appointments cover surges and leaves. Student jobs and graduate assistantships are separate systems tied to enrollment. Every posting names its type, which tells you the pace and the paperwork.

Reading a posting

A posting lists the duties, the required versus preferred qualifications (apply if you meet the required list — "preferred" is a wish list, not a filter), the salary or a salary range, the appointment percentage and whether it is ongoing or limited-term, the work location and any remote eligibility, the application deadline or "first review" date, and the documents required. "First review" matters: applications received by that date are guaranteed consideration, and while the posting may stay open, the strongest move is to be in by first review.

Applying and the timeline

Create a profile in the employment portal once and reuse it. Upload exactly the documents requested — a missing required attachment is the most common reason an application is set aside — and answer the screening questions specifically. Finalists complete reference checks and a background check appropriate to the role (some positions add credential verification, a driving record, or a credit check where job-relevant), and these are disclosed in advance. Timelines vary widely: a staff role might move from close to offer in three to six weeks; a faculty search commonly runs three months or more. You can check your status in the portal, and search committees are asked to notify applicants who are no longer under consideration.
