What a fellowship actually funds
Selected students get a materials budget, dedicated bench space and after-hours makerspace access for one semester to build something beyond a class project — a competition robot, an accessibility device, an art installation.
Applying
A short proposal describing the project, a rough budget and what success looks like is reviewed by makerspace staff each semester; prior making experience helps but is not required if the plan is realistic.
In and around Porter Falls
Research at Porter is applied and partner-driven: a Valley Health quality project, a DNR study on the Porter River, a manufacturing-process fix for a county employer. The Office of Research & Sponsored Programs handles the review and paperwork so the work can start on time.
The practical details
Award: Materials budget plus 24/7 makerspace access. Commitment: One semester, roughly 8 hours a week. Open to: Any major, any year.
