Manufacturing extension services

Practical help for regional manufacturers improving processes, products, technology, and workforce systems.

Home / Manufacturing extension services

Start with the operating problem

A first conversation defines the result the organization needs: shorter setup time, lower scrap, a safer workflow, a digital process, a feasibility study, energy reduction, supervisory development, or a skills plan. The team then recommends an assessment, training, student project, laboratory engagement, or longer technical project.

A scoped engagement

Before work begins, both sides document deliverables, timeline, staff participation, data needs, confidentiality, fees, and how success will be measured. Projects are scaled for small and midsize organizations as well as large plants; many begin with one value stream, product family, or pilot cell.

How students and faculty participate

When a problem fits learning goals, a faculty-supervised student team may collect data, model alternatives, prototype, test, or document a process. The company knows who is doing the work and reviews limits on data or publication in advance. Work requiring a guaranteed commercial result stays with professional staff or a specialist.

Leave capability behind

Good extension work does not end with a slide deck. It includes usable standard work, trained employees, a decision model, validated files, or a repeatable measurement method. A closeout documents results, remaining risks, ownership of materials, and the organization’s next decision.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, service, phone number, policy, and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
