Industrial Design Students Redesign Downtown Porter Falls Wayfinding
A studio course delivered a complete signage and map system for the city’s downtown, now being fabricated by a local shop.
A junior-level industrial design studio has delivered a full wayfinding system — pedestrian sign posts, a kiosk map, parking directional signs, and a downloadable map — for downtown Porter Falls, commissioned by the city’s main-street organization for a nominal fee that covered materials.
The eleven students spent the first month observing how visitors actually move through downtown and where they got lost, then iterated through three rounds of foam-core prototypes installed on-site for public feedback before finalizing the design.

A local sign shop is fabricating the system, with installation planned for spring. The students’ process book is on display in the Furlong Gallery.
