Baja SAE Team Finishes Third Nationally, Best Result in Program History

The student-built off-road vehicle placed third overall against more than 100 university teams.

UW–Porter Falls’s Baja SAE team finished third overall at the national competition against more than one hundred university teams, the program’s best result since it was founded eight years ago, driven by a strong showing in the endurance race and top-five finishes in acceleration and maneuverability events.

The team, made up mostly of mechanical and manufacturing engineering students, designed and built this year’s vehicle from scratch over two semesters, with a faculty advisor and support from three industry sponsors who donated materials and shop time.

“We rebuilt the suspension geometry twice after it failed testing. That failure in February is the whole reason the car survived the endurance race in June.”

— team captain

The team will display this year’s vehicle at the fall involvement fair and is already recruiting first-year members for next year’s build.
