Faculty Bring in a Record Year of External Research Funding

Grants and contracts crossed $9 million for the first time, led by manufacturing, health, and environmental science projects.

UW–Porter Falls faculty secured a record $9.1 million in external research funding this fiscal year, a jump driven largely by a state manufacturing-innovation grant, a multi-year federal environmental monitoring contract, and a cluster of smaller health-sciences awards.

The Office of Research & Sponsored Programs credits the growth partly to a two-year push to help faculty identify and apply for funding earlier, including a proposal-development fund that covers preliminary data collection before a grant is even submitted.

“None of this money is for its own sake. Almost every one of these projects has undergraduate research assistants on it, paid, doing real work.”

— vice provost for research

Roughly sixty undergraduate students were paid research assistants on funded projects this year, up from about forty the year before.
