Breweries and taprooms
Millrace Brewing occupies the 1880s malt house on the Millrace channel — exposed brick, communal tables, and a rotating lineup of six house beers plus two guest taps. The flagship Millwright Amber (5.2%) is malt-forward and sessionable; the seasonal River Run IPA (6.8%) shows up in April and disappears by Labor Day. Flights are $10 for four 4-oz pours. Food is BYO or ordered from Depot Pizza next door (they deliver to your table). Trivia runs Tuesdays at 7 p.m.; the student-engineering team “Hops & Bolts” has won three semesters running.
Two blocks north, Founders Fermentation focuses on lager and farmhouse styles in a smaller, quieter space that used to be a feed store. Their Porter County Helles (4.6%) and Saison du Millrace (5.9%) are the constants; the tap list changes monthly. No food, but the owner keeps a stack of takeout menus from Osteria Lucia and Mabel’s Bakery (day-old rye sourdough, $3).
Wine and cocktails
The Current sits on the second floor of the Welcome Center building, windows overlooking the river bend. The wine list leans Midwest — Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa — with a few European bottles for contrast. Glass pours $9–14. The cocktail menu is short and seasonal: a rye Manhattan with house-made cherry bark bitters in winter, a gin-ginger shrub spritz in summer. Happy hour (4–6 p.m. weekdays) does $6 house wines and $8 well cocktails. It’s the default spot for thesis defenses, faculty retirement toasts, and first dates that might lead to a second.
Barrel & Beam (basement of the old post office) is darker, louder, and whiskey-heavy — 120+ bottles behind the bar, flight boards organized by mash bill. The Millwright Old Fashioned uses local maple syrup instead of sugar. Industry night is Monday; service workers get 20% off with a pay stub or union card.
Live music and events
The Depot Stage (the old freight room at Depot Pizza) books local and regional acts Thursday–Saturday: folk, indie rock, bluegrass, occasional jazz trio. Cover is usually $5–15; students with ID get $2 off. The Founders Hall Auditorium hosts the university’s concert series — classical, world music, visiting artists — open to the public with a $10 suggested donation. Riverfront Park runs a free Friday-night summer concert series (June–August) on the floating stage; bring a blanket and a cooler, no glass.
Open mic at Millrace Brewing every other Wednesday, 8 p.m. sign-up, 8:30 downbeat. The Music Collective student org curates a monthly “New Noise” showcase at The Current featuring student bands and electronic producers.
Dive bars and late night
The Iron Pint (corner of College and Main) has been pouring cheap beer and shooting pool since 1962. $3 domestic pints, $4 well drinks, a dart league that takes the back room Tuesday nights, and a jukebox that still has the Millwrights’ 1998 cassette demo. Railroad Jack’s (next to the Welcome Center) is louder, younger, and does a 2-for-1 rail special 10 p.m.–midnight Thursday–Saturday. Both are cash-preferred; ATMs on site charge $3.50.
Waffle Window (alumni center basement) stays open until 3 a.m. Thursday–Saturday for liege waffles and spiked hot chocolate — popular with the post-bar crowd who want something warm before the walk back to campus.
Non-alcoholic and low-key
Roast & River stays open until 10 p.m. most nights; their cold-brew flight ($8 for three 4-oz pours) and house-made syrups (lavender, cardamom, maple-chili) make it a default study spot. Halvorsen Brew (library lobby) runs until midnight during finals week. The Forge Makerspace lounge has a soda fountain, board games, and a strict “no alcohol” policy — open to all students 24/7 with keycard. The Rec Center late-night basketball (10 p.m.–2 a.m. Fri/Sat) has a hydration station and a vending machine with electrolyte drinks.
Getting home safely
The Porter Loop night loop runs Thursday–Saturday until 2 a.m., connecting campus, the Depot District, Cedar Bluff restaurant strip, and the major off-campus apartment clusters. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) operates in town but surge pricing hits hard after 11 p.m. on weekends. The university’s Porter Cares office distributes free “Safe Ride” vouchers (good for one rideshare trip up to $15) at the Student Services Center — no questions asked. Designated-driver punch cards at Millrace Brewing and Founders Fermentation earn a free non-alcoholic flight after five DD visits.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. The bars, breweries, prices, and events described here are invented for this fictional university and town. No real businesses or locations are depicted.
