Orientation for families

A parallel program for parents and family members during new-student orientation.

Home / Orientation for families

What it's for

Families have real questions — how do I see the bill, who do I call if something's wrong, is my student okay — and answering them in a dedicated track means the student sessions can focus on the student. It also sets expectations about privacy: once enrolled, your student controls who sees their records.

The honest part

Sessions are frank about the adjustment: most first-year students have a rough patch, most are fine by spring, and the best support is usually listening plus knowing which office to point them toward. You'll leave with a contact list and a calendar of the moments that tend to be hard.

In and around Porter Falls

Student life at Porter is organised out of Founders Union, the building students call the campus living room. The Dean of Students Office is on the second floor.

The practical details

Runs alongside: The student orientation — same days, separate sessions, so students do their thing independently. Covers: How billing and financial aid work, safety and health services, how to support without hovering, what the first semester really looks like. Also: A resource fair, a campus tour, and a chance to meet other families. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Dean of Students Office (Founders Union, Room 200). Call (715) 555–0182 or email deanofstudents@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
