What the Association does
The Parent & Family Association is a volunteer organization, not a university office — it's run by current parents and family members who want a direct hand in campus life beyond writing tuition checks. It funds care packages during finals week, welcomes new families at orientation, staffs a table at Family Weekend, and raises money each year for the Family Emergency Grant (see below). It also acts as an informal feedback channel: association leadership meets twice a term with the Dean of Students to raise concerns families have flagged.
How it's organized
A small elected board (chair, vice chair, treasurer, and regional representatives for the states most families come from) runs the Association with support from a staff liaison in Parent & Family Programs. Board terms run one year and elections happen each spring at the annual meeting, held virtually so families anywhere can vote. Meeting notes and the annual budget are posted for any member to review.
Joining and getting involved
Any parent, guardian, or family member of a current student is automatically a member — there are no dues. Involvement ranges from a five-minute newsletter sign-up to serving on the board: help staff the Family Weekend table, join a regional families group in your area, volunteer for the finals-week care-package assembly, or just reply to the biweekly newsletter with questions the office can route to the right department.
The Family Emergency Grant
The Association's signature project is a family-funded, family-governed grant that provides quick, no-interest emergency funds to any Porter student facing a sudden financial gap — a summer visit home for a family emergency, a laptop that died mid-semester, a security deposit for off-campus housing. A small committee of board members reviews requests confidentially and can turn around a decision within 48 hours. It is funded entirely by Association fundraising and family donations, separate from the university's own Student Emergency Fund.
