Salary negotiation basics

How to research a fair number and ask for it without risking the offer — a workshop and a one-page guide.

Home / Salary negotiation basics

Getting to a number

Career Services publishes median starting salaries by major from the annual first-destination survey. Combine that with a cost-of-living check for the city and a role-specific range, and you have a defensible ask — usually a modest percentage above the offer, with a reason attached.

Making the ask

Thank them, say you're excited, then state your researched range and what's driving it. Ask by email so they can take it to whoever approves it. Most employers expect one round of this and won't pull an offer over a polite, evidence-backed request. Get the final number in writing before you resign anything else.

In and around Porter Falls

Career Services works with every major, but the pattern is the same across them: a required internship, co-op or clinical placement before graduation, listed on each program page. Ninety-six percent of Porter undergraduates complete one, most of them with an employer in the Valley or the Cities.

The practical details

Research with: Handshake salary data, the outcomes report for your major, and public sector scales. Rule of thumb: Negotiate once, in good faith, after a written offer — not during interviews. Beyond base pay: Start date, signing bonus, relocation, PTO, and review timing are all negotiable. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Career Services (Founders Union, Room 160). Call (715) 555–0205 or email careers@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
