College of Science & Mathematics
The academic home for Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Mathematics, and Physics & Astronomy — the departments that teach the science and math coursework nearly every Porter major depends on.
A college most students never declare, but nearly every student needs
For most of Porter's history this college granted no bachelor's major of its own — its departments carried the science and math coursework that runs underneath nearly every other program on campus: the anatomy and chemistry prerequisites nursing students clear before their first clinical rotation, the calculus sequence every engineer takes in year one, the statistics course every psychology and business major eventually hits, and the lab science requirement built into general education. A Biology and a Chemistry major were added directly to the college once enrollment in the underlying coursework made the case for standalone degrees rather than service courses alone.
Two further bachelor's degrees are jointly administered with the College of Applied & Technical Studies: Applied Mathematics and Environmental Science. The coursework and faculty live here; the degree and student advising sit there. It is an unglamorous arrangement that a surprising number of majors quietly depend on.
