Sponsoring a capstone project

A longer, higher-stakes partnership for a multidisciplinary student team working toward a tested result.

Capstone versus a class project

A capstone asks a team to integrate what it has learned across the degree and defend a final result. It usually carries more technical depth, testing, documentation, and stakeholder contact than a shorter classroom project. A sponsor should have an authentic problem but not depend on the team for mission-critical production work.

Start one term early

Good projects are recruited and screened before the capstone begins. The sponsor submits a problem statement, desired outcome, constraints, available equipment or data, and a staff contact. Faculty check fit, student workload, safety, ethics, and whether the work leaves enough design space for students.

Resources and costs

Sponsors may provide materials, specialized access, sample components, travel, or a modest project fee. Porter supplies ordinary instructional facilities and faculty supervision. Unusual fabrication, hazardous material, proprietary software, field travel, or external testing is budgeted before selection.

What the sponsor receives

Typical deliverables include requirements, alternatives considered, drawings or code, a prototype or analysis, test results, recommendations, and a final presentation. The agreement states which items transfer to the sponsor, which students may retain for portfolios, and what support exists after the course ends.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, service, phone number, policy, and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
