What student government does
The Porter Student Association is the elected student government. Its most concrete power is over segregated fees — the student-paid line that funds the rec center, health services, the Porter Loop shuttle, student organizations, and campus programming. Students, through their representatives, recommend how those dollars are allocated each year.
Funding student organizations
A large share of the org budget is distributed by a student committee through the org funding process — events, travel to competitions, speakers, equipment. If you are in a club, someone on your leadership team deals with this; the deadlines are a term ahead and the rules are specific.
Shared governance
Beyond fees, students sit on university committees alongside faculty and staff — curriculum, academic policy, technology, sustainability, dining, safety, parking. It is the formal channel for "students think this course requirement is broken" or "the shuttle schedule does not work." Seats are appointed each year and often go unfilled.
Faculty Senate and the other senates
Faculty Senate owns the curriculum and academic policy; there are parallel senates for academic staff and university staff. Students do not vote in Faculty Senate but do have representation and can bring items forward through it. Agendas and minutes are public — worth reading if a policy is affecting you.
How to actually influence something
Vote in the spring PSA election (turnout is low, so your vote is not diluted). Bring a specific, documented issue to a PSA meeting during open comment — "the 8 a.m. lab sections conflict with the first shuttle" moves further than "transportation is bad." Take a committee seat if you want real leverage; they are chronically short of students.
Running for a seat
PSA senate and committee seats, and org leadership, are open to any student in good standing. It is a strong leadership line, a direct view of how the university works, and — for the fee and committee roles — genuine decision-making power. Elections and appointments happen in spring for the following year.
