The I-9 is non-negotiable
Federal law requires it within three business days of your start date, verified in person with unexpired original documents. No I-9, no paycheck — and you can't start work. International students complete it after their SSN comes through; see the SSN help page.
The W-4
Sets how much tax is withheld. Most students claim themselves and end up with a refund; the HR or payroll office and the VITA tax site can help you fill it out if the form is confusing. You can change it any time your situation changes.
In and around Porter Falls
Career Services works with every major, but the pattern is the same across them: a required internship, co-op or clinical placement before graduation, listed on each program page. Ninety-six percent of Porter undergraduates complete one, most of them with an employer in the Valley or the Cities.
The practical details
Before day one: Complete a hiring packet: the I-9 (with original ID documents, in person, by the third day of work), a W-4 for tax withholding, and direct-deposit setup. Bring to the I-9: Either a passport, or a driver's license plus a Social Security card or birth certificate — originals, not copies. Then: A short onboarding with your department and any required training (safety, FERPA, cash handling) before you're scheduled. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.
If you have a question
The office behind this is Career Services (Founders Union, Room 160). Call (715) 555–0205 or email careers@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
