Student Media

The Porter Current

The independent, student-run newspaper of UW–Porter Falls, in print biweekly during the semester and updated online year-round.

What it covers

Campus governance and budget decisions, student organization news, athletics, arts and a long-running opinion section make up most issues. The Current has broken stories the university communications office did not initially want covered — a 2019 series on deferred maintenance in the residence halls led directly to the funding request that eventually paid for the Kessler Hall renovation.

Editorial independence

The Current is funded by a combination of segregated student fees and advertising, with an independent student editorial board that sets content without university sign-off. A faculty adviser in the Communication department reviews for legal exposure (libel, prior restraint concerns) but does not set or veto coverage decisions.

How to join

No experience or journalism major required. Staff meetings are open Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in the Student Media suite in Founders Union; writers, photographers, illustrators, and the business-side advertising and circulation team all start the same way — show up to a meeting.

Print and online

A print edition comes out every other Tuesday during the fall and spring semesters and is distributed free at newsstands across campus; the website publishes throughout the week, including over breaks when news happens.
