Where students can register
A student may register to vote using either their campus address or their permanent home address, but not both, and must vote in only one place. Wesconsin allows registration by mail, online with a state ID, or in person — including at the polling place on Election Day with proof of residence. The Center for Community Engagement keeps a current, nonpartisan guide with the exact steps and forms.
Deadlines
For a general election: online and by-mail registration close about 20 days before Election Day; in-person registration at the clerk's office closes the Friday before; and same-day registration is available at the polls with an acceptable proof of residence. A photo ID is required to vote. Absentee ballots must be requested and returned by dates published each election; request early.
On campus
Nonpartisan registration drives run in Founders Union in the weeks before each election, and the polling place for on-campus residents is listed with the drive. The university does not endorse candidates or parties; the civic-engagement program also runs candidate forums and structured dialogues that are open to students across the political spectrum.
Federal requirement
Under the Higher Education Act, the university makes a good-faith effort to distribute voter-registration forms to students for federal and state elections. Requesting a form, or asking where to vote, never affects a student's standing, aid, or records.
