Planning to study abroad

An 18-month runway covering program choice, credit, money, and health.

Home / Planning to study abroad

18–12 months out: choose the program

Meet an education-abroad adviser and compare on the things that matter: does it fit your degree plan, what language, how long, what housing, and total cost including flights. Faculty-led programs (10 days to a few weeks) are the low-friction way to start; semester exchanges cost about the same as a term at Porter and go deepest.

12–9 months out: apply and lock academics

Submit the program application and, separately, get your intended courses pre-approved by your department so they map to real requirements on your degree audit. Do not skip this — coming home with credits that only count as free electives is the most common regret.

9–6 months out: money and documents

Meet Financial Aid: most federal, state, and institutional aid applies to approved programs, and study-abroad scholarships have deadlines in this window. Apply or renew your passport now — processing is slow and some countries require six months of validity past your return. Start the visa process on the program's timeline.

6–3 months out: health and logistics

Complete the travel health appointment for vaccines and prescriptions, register the trip in the international travel registry, and confirm the required insurance. Sort out how you will access money abroad, what happens to your phone, and whether you are keeping or releasing your Porter housing.

While you are away

Stay enrolled at Porter through the program, keep every syllabus and graded assignment (you may need them for the credit transfer), and check your Porter email — registration for the term you return still happens on Porter's calendar and you do not want to miss your window.

Coming back

Submit your transcript to the education-abroad office for the credit transfer, meet your adviser to slot the credits onto your plan, and give the re-entry programming a chance — the adjustment home surprises people. The office also hires returned students as peer advisers.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
