Porter Falls Public Library
Porter Falls Public Library (210 Main Street, across from the Welcome Center) is separate from the university’s Halvorsen Library but reciprocates borrowing: any student with a UW–Porter Falls ID gets a free county card. The building is a 1915 Carnegie library with a 2008 addition — quiet study rooms (reservable online), a maker corner (3-D printer, Cricut, sewing machine), and the Local History Room with mill records, city directories, and the Porter Press archives. Programs: Tech Help Tuesdays (drop-in, 2–4 p.m.), Job Lab (resume review, Wednesdays 10 a.m.), ESL Conversation Circle (Thursdays 6 p.m.), and a surprisingly good Graphic Novel Book Club (monthly, 7 p.m., meets at Roast & River). The library’s Library of Things lends: board games, cake pans, a portable PA system, a soil tester, and a ukulele.
Porter County Community Center
Porter County Community Center (500 River Road, 10-minute bike ride from campus on the Riverfront Trail) has a gym, indoor pool (lap swim 6–8 a.m., open swim 12–8 p.m.), weight room, and meeting rooms rented by the hour. The Senior Program runs weekday lunches, bridge club, and a Tech Buddies pairing where students help older adults with phones, video calls, and telehealth — counts for service-learning credit in several courses. The center’s Emergency Shelter activates during winter storms or power outages; student volunteers staff the overnight shift (training provided, $15/hr stipend from the county). Summer day camp hires 20+ students as counselors (apply in March).
City Hall and county offices
Porter Falls City Hall (300 Mill Street) handles: parking permits (residential and overnight), building permits (needed for any senior project structure), business licenses, and the Rental Housing Guide (published jointly with the university each spring). The Porter County Courthouse (same block) houses the Clerk of Courts, Register of Deeds, and the County Treasurer (property tax payments). Voter registration: Wisconsin allows same-day registration at the polls; bring your UW ID and a document with your Porter Falls address (lease, utility bill, bank statement). The Election Information page has precinct maps and sample ballots.
Nonprofits and volunteer hubs
Porter County Food Bank (industrial park, 5 min drive) distributes 12,000 lbs/month; student volunteers sort Tuesdays and Thursdays 3–6 p.m. (shifts count for service hours). Habitat for Humanity Porter County builds two homes a year; the Construction Management capstone often frames one. Riverkeepers (citizen water-quality monitoring) meets monthly at the library; students in Environmental Science adopt a sampling site. Porter Falls Arts Council runs the summer concert series and the Depot Gallery (rotating shows, student work welcome). The Community Partnerships Office (Founders Hall 220) maintains a searchable volunteer database and matches students to placements.
Faith communities
Porter Falls has two dozen congregations; the ones within walking distance of campus: St. Brigid’s Catholic (student mass Sunday 7 p.m., Newman Center in Founders Hall basement), First Lutheran (ELCA, Wednesday Taizé 8 p.m.), Porter Falls Methodist (free community dinner Tuesday 5:30 p.m., all welcome), Congregation Beth El (Reform, Friday Shabbat 6 p.m., potluck monthly), and Masjid an-Nur (Friday Jummah 1:15 p.m., prayer space in Student Services Center). The Interfaith Council student org meets monthly for dialogue and shared service projects.
Student-specific resources
The Porter Cares office (Student Services Center 140) is the front door for: emergency grants (rent, utilities, medical), the food pantry (open Mon–Fri 9–4, Sat 10–2), the winter gear closet, the textbook lending library, and case management for housing crises. Legal Aid: the Entrepreneurship Legal Clinic offers free 30-minute consults on landlord-tenant, consumer, and immigration questions (appointments via Porter Cares). Childcare: the Little Millwrights center (campus-adjacent, sliding scale, priority to student parents) has a waitlist — apply at admission. Transportation: the Porter Loop shuttle and regional coach are free with student ID; the Safe Ride voucher program (see Nightlife) covers late-night gaps.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. The organizations, services, hours, and programs described here are invented for this fictional university and town. No real institutions or services are depicted.
