About Applied Mathematics
Mathematics aimed at problems in science, engineering, and industry. Courses carry the APMTH subject code and are offered through the College of Science & Mathematics. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.

Of the 9 APMTH courses listed, 1 is introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 0 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Applied Mathematics department is the only way around them.
APMTH 2400 — Calculus I 4 cr
Limits, derivatives, and the definite integral, with applied modeling.
Prerequisite: MATH 1400.
APMTH 2500 — Calculus II 4 cr
Integration techniques and applications, sequences, and series.
Prerequisite: APMTH 2400.
APMTH 2700 — Multivariable Calculus 4 cr
Vectors, partial derivatives, multiple integrals, and vector calculus.
Prerequisite: APMTH 2500.
APMTH 3100 — Differential Equations and Modeling 3 cr
ODEs, systems, stability, and building and testing models of real processes.
Prerequisite: APMTH 2700.
APMTH 3300 — Numerical Methods 3 cr
Error, root-finding, interpolation, numerical linear algebra, quadrature, and ODE solvers, implemented in code.
Prerequisite: APMTH 2600, CS 1100.
APMTH 3500 — Probability Models 3 cr
Random variables, distributions, expectation, Markov chains, and queuing.
Prerequisite: APMTH 2500.
APMTH 3700 — Optimization 3 cr
Linear, integer, and nonlinear programming, duality, and modeling decision problems.
Prerequisite: APMTH 2600.
APMTH 3900 — Mathematical Statistics 3 cr
Estimation, hypothesis testing, and the theory behind common procedures.
Prerequisite: APMTH 3500.
APMTH 4900 — Applied Mathematics Capstone 3 cr
A modeling project on a real problem from a partner discipline, with a written and oral report.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
