About Business Administration

The core of running an organization — across every function. Courses carry the BUS subject code and are offered through the College of Management. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.

How the sequence works

Of the 9 BUS courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 2 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Business Administration department is the only way around them.

BUS 1000 — Introduction to Business 3 cr

How firms create value: the functional areas, forms of organization, the competitive environment, and business ethics.

Prerequisite: none.

BUS 2100 — Financial Accounting 3 cr

The accounting cycle, the four statements, and reading a set of financials to understand a company's position.

Prerequisite: none.

BUS 2200 — Managerial Accounting 3 cr

Cost behavior, budgeting, variance analysis, and using cost information to make operating decisions.

Prerequisite: BUS 2100.

BUS 2400 — Principles of Marketing 3 cr

Segmentation, targeting, and positioning; the marketing mix; and building a plan from customer insight.

Prerequisite: BUS 1000.

BUS 2600 — Principles of Management 3 cr

Planning, organizing, leading, and controlling; motivation; teams; and the manager's day.

Prerequisite: BUS 1000.

BUS 3100 — Business Finance 3 cr

Time value of money, valuation, capital budgeting, risk and return, and capital structure.

Prerequisite: BUS 2100, MATH 1600.

BUS 3300 — Operations Management 3 cr

Process design, capacity, quality, inventory, and lean thinking across manufacturing and services.

Prerequisite: BUS 2600.

BUS 3500 — Business Analytics 3 cr

Framing a business question, working with data, modeling, and communicating a recommendation to a decision-maker.

Prerequisite: MATH 1600.

BUS 4900 — Strategic Management 3 cr

Integrating the functions: industry and competitive analysis, strategy formulation, and execution, worked through cases and a simulation.

Prerequisite: senior standing.
