About Construction Management
Planning, estimating, and running construction projects. Courses carry the CNST subject code and are offered through the College of Engineering & Technology. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 CNST courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Construction Management department is the only way around them.
CNST 1500 — Introduction to Construction 3 cr
The project delivery process, the parties involved, drawings and specifications, and construction safety fundamentals.
Prerequisite: none.
CNST 2100 — Construction Materials and Methods 4 cr
Site work, concrete, masonry, steel, wood, and enclosure systems, and how each is built, with site visits.
Prerequisite: CNST 1500.
CNST 2400 — Construction Graphics and BIM 3 cr
Reading and producing construction documents and building an information model used for coordination and quantities.
Prerequisite: CNST 1500.
CNST 3100 — Estimating 3 cr
Quantity takeoff, pricing labor, material, and equipment, and assembling a competitive bid.
Prerequisite: CNST 2100.
CNST 3300 — Scheduling and Project Controls 3 cr
Critical-path scheduling, resource loading, earned value, and keeping a project on time and on budget.
Prerequisite: CNST 3100.
CNST 3500 — Construction Law and Contracts 3 cr
Contract types, the bidding process, changes and claims, liens, and risk allocation.
Prerequisite: junior standing.
CNST 3700 — Mechanical and Electrical Systems 3 cr
Building HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems from the constructor's point of view — coordination, rough-in, and commissioning.
Prerequisite: CNST 2100.
CNST 3900 — Construction Safety Management 3 cr
Regulations, hazard analysis, the safety plan, and building a safety culture on a jobsite.
Prerequisite: CNST 2100.
CNST 4900 — Construction Capstone 3 cr
A team plans a real building project end to end: estimate, schedule, logistics, and a management plan, presented to industry judges.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
