About Finance
Valuation, investment, and the management of financial risk. Courses carry the FIN subject code and are offered through the College of Management. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.

Of the 9 FIN courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 0 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Finance department is the only way around them.
FIN 3100 — Business Finance 3 cr
Time value of money, valuation of stocks and bonds, capital budgeting, cost of capital, and capital structure.
Prerequisite: ACCT 2100, MATH 1600.
FIN 3200 — Investments 3 cr
Risk and return, portfolio theory, asset pricing models, market efficiency, and fixed-income and equity analysis.
Prerequisite: FIN 3100.
FIN 3300 — Corporate Finance 3 cr
Capital-structure and payout policy, mergers and acquisitions, leasing, and financial distress.
Prerequisite: FIN 3100.
FIN 3400 — Financial Markets and Institutions 3 cr
The money and capital markets, banks and intermediaries, the yield curve, and regulation.
Prerequisite: FIN 3100.
FIN 3500 — Financial Modeling 3 cr
Building and auditing spreadsheet models for valuation, forecasting, and scenario analysis.
Prerequisite: FIN 3100.
FIN 3600 — Derivatives 3 cr
Forwards, futures, options, and swaps; pricing; and using derivatives to hedge and to speculate.
Prerequisite: FIN 3200.
FIN 3700 — Personal Financial Planning 3 cr
Budgeting, credit, insurance, taxes, investing, and retirement planning for individuals and households.
Prerequisite: FIN 3100.
FIN 4100 — International Finance 3 cr
Exchange rates, currency risk, international capital budgeting, and financing the multinational firm.
Prerequisite: FIN 3300.
FIN 4900 — Cases in Finance 3 cr
A capstone built around finance cases and a portfolio or valuation project defended to a panel.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
