People, environments, and the spatial patterns that connect them. Courses carry the GEOG subject code and are offered through the College of Science & Mathematics. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 GEOG courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 4 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Geography department is the only way around them.
GEOG 1000 — World Regional Geography 3 cr
The physical and human geography of the major world regions and the processes of globalization that link them.
Prerequisite: none.
GEOG 2100 — Physical Geography 4 cr
Weather and climate, landforms, soils, and biogeography, with lab.
Prerequisite: none.
GEOG 2200 — Human Geography 3 cr
Population, migration, urbanization, agriculture, industry, and cultural landscapes.
Prerequisite: GEOG 1000.
GEOG 2300 — Cartography and Map Design 3 cr
Map projections, symbolization, generalization, and producing clear thematic maps.
Prerequisite: none.
GEOG 2500 — Introduction to GIS 3 cr
Spatial data models, coordinate systems, overlay analysis, and cartographic output using GIS software.
Prerequisite: none.
GEOG 3100 — Remote Sensing 3 cr
Acquiring and interpreting satellite and aerial imagery, classification, and change detection.
Prerequisite: GEOG 2500.
GEOG 3300 — Urban Geography 3 cr
City systems, land use, transportation, housing, and planning.
Prerequisite: GEOG 2200.
GEOG 3500 — GIS Analysis and Modeling 4 cr
Suitability modeling, network analysis, spatial statistics, and a client project.
Prerequisite: GEOG 2500.
GEOG 4900 — Geography Capstone 3 cr
An applied spatial-analysis project for a community or agency partner.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
