About Hospitality & Tourism Management
Running hotels, restaurants, events, and destinations. Courses carry the HOSP subject code and are offered through the College of Management. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 HOSP courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Hospitality & Tourism Management department is the only way around them.
HOSP 1500 — Introduction to Hospitality 3 cr
The industry's segments, the guest experience, service culture, and career paths, with site visits.
Prerequisite: none.
HOSP 2100 — Food Service Operations 4 cr
Menu, purchasing, production, sanitation, and cost control, with time in a teaching kitchen and dining room.
Prerequisite: HOSP 1500.
HOSP 2300 — Lodging Operations 3 cr
Front office, housekeeping, revenue management, and the systems that run a property.
Prerequisite: HOSP 1500.
HOSP 2500 — Event and Meeting Management 3 cr
Planning, logistics, budgeting, vendors, and running an event from concept to teardown.
Prerequisite: HOSP 1500.
HOSP 3100 — Hospitality Finance and Analytics 3 cr
Property-level statements, the uniform system of accounts, forecasting, and pricing decisions.
Prerequisite: BUS 2100.
HOSP 3300 — Hospitality Marketing and Revenue 3 cr
Distribution channels, online reputation, loyalty, and revenue management in practice.
Prerequisite: MKTG 2400.
HOSP 3500 — Tourism and Destination Management 3 cr
Destination planning, economic impact, sustainability, and the visitor economy.
Prerequisite: HOSP 1500.
HOSP 3700 — Human Resources in Hospitality 3 cr
Recruiting, scheduling, training, and retention in a high-turnover, service-intensive industry.
Prerequisite: HOSP 2300.
HOSP 4900 — Hospitality Capstone 3 cr
A consulting project for an industry client, or the operation of a live event or dining concept, evaluated by professionals.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
