About Innovation Studies
How new value is created — across products, services, and organizations. Courses carry the INNO subject code and are offered through the College of Management. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 8 INNO courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Innovation Studies department is the only way around them.
INNO 1500 — The Innovation Mindset 3 cr
Curiosity, reframing, and comfort with ambiguity, practiced through rapid challenges.
Prerequisite: none.
INNO 2100 — Design Thinking 3 cr
Empathy, problem framing, ideation, prototyping, and testing, run as a team studio.
Prerequisite: INNO 1500.
INNO 2300 — Creativity and Idea Generation 3 cr
Techniques for producing, combining, and selecting ideas, individually and in groups.
Prerequisite: INNO 1500.
INNO 2500 — Innovation in Organizations 3 cr
Why established organizations struggle to innovate, and the structures and cultures that help.
Prerequisite: INNO 1500.
INNO 3100 — Prototyping and Testing 3 cr
Building rough versions fast — physical, digital, and service — and learning from users.
Prerequisite: INNO 2100.
INNO 3300 — Innovation and Society 3 cr
Technology adoption, unintended consequences, equity, and responsible innovation.
Prerequisite: INNO 1500.
INNO 3500 — Intrapreneurship Practicum 3 cr
Running an innovation project inside a partner organization.
Prerequisite: INNO 2500.
INNO 4900 — Innovation Capstone 3 cr
A team takes an opportunity from insight to a tested, pitched concept.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
