About Leadership Studies
The theory and practice of leading people and organizations. Courses carry the LEAD subject code and are offered through the College of Management. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 8 LEAD courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Leadership Studies department is the only way around them.
LEAD 1500 — Foundations of Leadership 3 cr
Major leadership theories, self-assessment, and the difference between leadership and authority.
Prerequisite: none.
LEAD 2100 — Team Leadership and Facilitation 3 cr
Group development, roles, decision-making, and running a productive meeting.
Prerequisite: LEAD 1500.
LEAD 2300 — Ethical Leadership 3 cr
Values, moral reasoning, power, and building an ethical climate.
Prerequisite: LEAD 1500.
LEAD 2500 — Communication for Leaders 3 cr
Framing a message, difficult conversations, feedback, and public communication.
Prerequisite: COMM 1100.
LEAD 3100 — Leading Change 3 cr
Diagnosing an organization, change models, resistance, and sustaining a change.
Prerequisite: LEAD 2100.
LEAD 3300 — Conflict Resolution and Negotiation 3 cr
Interests versus positions, mediation basics, and principled negotiation, with simulations.
Prerequisite: LEAD 2100.
LEAD 3500 — Inclusive Leadership 3 cr
Bias, belonging, equity, and leading across difference.
Prerequisite: LEAD 1500.
LEAD 4900 — Leadership Capstone 3 cr
A leadership project with a real organization, plus a reflective portfolio of growth.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
