Making things efficiently — processes, systems, quality, and automation. Courses carry the MFGE subject code and are offered through the College of Engineering & Technology. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 MFGE courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 1 is advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering department is the only way around them.
MFGE 1500 — Manufacturing Processes 3 cr
Casting, forming, machining, joining, and additive processes; process capability; and choosing a process for a part.
Prerequisite: none.
MFGE 2200 — Engineering Economics 3 cr
Time value of money, cash-flow analysis, depreciation, replacement, and making a defensible investment decision.
Prerequisite: MATH 1600.
MFGE 2500 — Materials Science 3 cr
Structure and properties of metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites; phase diagrams; heat treatment; and failure.
Prerequisite: CHEM 1050.
MFGE 3100 — Work Design and Ergonomics 3 cr
Method study, time standards, workstation and workplace design, and reducing physical risk.
Prerequisite: sophomore standing.
MFGE 3300 — Quality Engineering 3 cr
Statistical process control, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, and problem-solving methods.
Prerequisite: MATH 1600.
MFGE 3500 — Automation and Robotics 4 cr
Sensors, actuators, programmable logic controllers, industrial robots, and integrating a small automated cell.
Prerequisite: EE 2400.
MFGE 3700 — Operations and Supply Chain 3 cr
Forecasting, inventory, scheduling, lean methods, and the flow of material from supplier to customer.
Prerequisite: MFGE 2200.
MFGE 3900 — Facilities and Systems Design 3 cr
Layout, material handling, capacity, simulation, and designing a production system to meet demand.
Prerequisite: MFGE 3700.
MFGE 4900 — Senior Design 3 cr
A team improves a real manufacturing process or system for a sponsor, measured against a baseline.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
