About Mathematics
The structures and methods behind quantitative reasoning. Courses carry the MATH subject code and are offered through the College of Science & Mathematics. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 MATH courses listed, 2 are introductory (numbers under 300), 4 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 0 courses have no prerequisite and are a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Mathematics department is the only way around them.
MATH 1200 — College Algebra 3 cr
Functions, equations, inequalities, polynomials, exponentials, logarithms, and systems.
Prerequisite: placement.
MATH 1300 — Trigonometry 3 cr
Trigonometric functions, identities, equations, and applications to triangles and periodic phenomena.
Prerequisite: MATH 1200.
MATH 1400 — Precalculus 4 cr
A combined, accelerated treatment of algebra and trigonometry preparing for calculus.
Prerequisite: placement.
MATH 1600 — Introductory Statistics 3 cr
Data description, probability, sampling distributions, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests, with software.
Prerequisite: MATH 1200.
MATH 2400 — Calculus I 4 cr
Limits, derivatives, applications of the derivative, and the definite integral.
Prerequisite: MATH 1400.
MATH 2500 — Calculus II 4 cr
Techniques and applications of integration, sequences and series, and parametric and polar curves.
Prerequisite: MATH 2400.
MATH 2600 — Linear Algebra 3 cr
Systems, matrices, vector spaces, eigenvalues, and applications.
Prerequisite: MATH 2400.
MATH 3100 — Differential Equations 3 cr
First-order equations, linear higher-order equations, systems, and Laplace transforms, with modeling.
Prerequisite: MATH 2500.
MATH 3300 — Discrete Mathematics 3 cr
Logic, proof, sets, relations, combinatorics, and graphs.
Prerequisite: MATH 2400.
