Mechanics, energy, materials, and machine design. Courses carry the ME subject code and are offered through the College of Engineering & Technology. Numbers below 300 are introductory, 300–499 advanced undergraduate, and 500 and above graduate. Prerequisites are enforced at registration.
How the sequence works
Of the 9 ME courses listed, 3 are introductory (numbers under 300), 2 are advanced undergraduate (300–499). 1 course has no prerequisite and is a reasonable first step. Later courses assume the earlier ones, so read prerequisites before you plan a term — they are enforced at registration and an override from the Mechanical Engineering department is the only way around them.
ME 1000 — Introduction to Engineering 2 cr
The engineering method, teamwork, technical drawing, measurement, and a hands-on design–build project in the first term.
Prerequisite: none.
ME 2100 — Statics 3 cr
Forces and moments on bodies in equilibrium: trusses, frames, friction, centroids, and free-body diagrams as a habit.
Prerequisite: MATH 2400, PHYS 2010.
ME 2200 — Dynamics 3 cr
Kinematics and kinetics of particles and rigid bodies, work and energy, impulse and momentum, and vibration basics.
Prerequisite: ME 2100.
ME 2400 — Mechanics of Materials 3 cr
Stress, strain, axial and torsional loading, bending, deflection, combined loading, and failure criteria.
Prerequisite: ME 2100.
ME 2600 — Thermodynamics 3 cr
The first and second laws, properties of pure substances, and analysis of power and refrigeration cycles.
Prerequisite: MATH 2400, PHYS 2010.
ME 3100 — Fluid Mechanics 3 cr
Fluid statics, control-volume analysis, the Bernoulli and Navier–Stokes equations, pipe flow, and pumps.
Prerequisite: ME 2200.
ME 3300 — Machine Design 3 cr
Designing shafts, gears, bearings, fasteners, and springs against fatigue and other failure modes, with codes and safety factors.
Prerequisite: ME 2400.
ME 3500 — Heat Transfer 3 cr
Conduction, convection, and radiation; heat exchangers; and thermal analysis of real components.
Prerequisite: ME 2600, ME 3100.
ME 4900 — Senior Design 3 cr
A two-term team project taking an engineering problem from requirements through analysis, prototype, and test for an industry sponsor.
Prerequisite: senior standing.
