How it works
IRS-certified student volunteers prepare and e-file straightforward returns — wages, education credits, common deductions — under the supervision of accounting faculty. Returns with rental income, business income or anything unusual are referred out rather than attempted.
Two purposes at once
It's a genuine service to the Valley, and it's the accounting program's largest experiential-learning placement — a volunteer files dozens of real returns in a season, which no classroom exercise matches.
In and around Porter Falls
Porter Falls is a town of about 17,000 that has always shared its workforce with the university. Projects are scoped to the Valley first: Porter, Cedar Bluff and Redgranite before anywhere else.
The practical details
When: February through mid-April, Commerce Hall. Who's served: Students, and Valley households under the income threshold. Volunteers: Accounting students, IRS-certified each January. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.
If you have a question
The office behind this is Office of Outreach & Engagement (Millwright Hall, Room 120). Call (715) 555–0235 or email engage@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
