Time-to-degree extensions

The limit on how long you have to finish a graduate degree, and how to get more time.

Home / Time-to-degree extensions

When the clock is a problem

Life happens — illness, funding gaps, a job, a change of advisor. If you're approaching the limit, don't go silent: file the extension petition before it lapses, with a realistic term-by-term plan to finish and your committee's backing.

What review looks at

Progress made, the credibility of the plan, and whether the remaining work is scoped. Repeated extensions get harder to obtain. An approved extension usually comes with checkpoints; missing them can put you in the program-dismissal process, so treat the new timeline as firm.

In and around Porter Falls

Porter's eight graduate programs are small and applied — most students are working in the Valley while they study — and the Graduate School office in Millwright Hall keeps the handbooks and funding notices in one place.

The practical details

The limit: Master's programs commonly allow about 5 years and doctoral programs about 7 from first enrollment; the handbook states yours. Extension: A petition with an advisor-endorsed completion plan and timeline; granted for a defined additional period, not open-ended. Stale credit: Very old coursework may need to be revalidated or retaken if it's outside the currency window. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Graduate School (Millwright Hall, Room 320). Call (715) 555–0225 or email gradschool@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
