Trademark & Logo Licensing

The Ironclads logo and the Porter name are trademarked — here is who can legitimately put them on a T-shirt.

Home Trademark & Logo Licensing

What is protected

The university name and seal, the "UW–Porter Falls" and "Ironclads" wordmarks, and the Ironclad mascot logo are all registered trademarks, licensed through the university’s trademark office rather than free for anyone to print. This applies to physical merchandise (shirts, mugs, stickers) sold or given away in any quantity, not to personal, non-commercial use like a hand-drawn poster for a dorm room.

Recognized student organizations

An officially recognized student organization can use the marks on apparel and materials for its own promotion without paying a licensing fee, but still has to submit the design for a quick approval to confirm correct usage (right colors, no altered proportions on the mascot, no combination with an unrelated commercial logo). This keeps a club T-shirt from looking like an official university product it is not.

Commercial vendors

An outside company producing Porter-branded merchandise for sale must be a licensed vendor, paying a royalty on sales back to the university (split between the athletics department and the general scholarship fund) and meeting basic labor-practice standards the licensing office verifies before approval.

Getting something approved

Design approval requests go to trademark@uwporterfalls.edu with the design and intended use; most straightforward student-organization requests get a same-week answer.
