Winter Term

The three-week January session — what it is for, the one-course rule, faculty-led travel, and how it is billed.

The January session

Winter Term is an optional three-week session between fall and spring, roughly January 4–22. It exists to let students take exactly one course with total focus: a Core requirement, a special-topics course that only runs in January, a field experience, or a faculty-led travel course. It is not required, it does not appear on every student's plan, and skipping it is completely normal — but for a student who wants to graduate a semester early, clear a stubborn requirement, or try a subject outside their major, it is three weeks well spent.

Most Winter Term courses are online or hybrid so students can take them from home over the break; a smaller set meet on campus, and the travel courses leave the country.

One course, and the pace behind that rule

You may enroll in only one Winter Term course, and the rule is not bureaucratic caution — a three-credit course compressed into 15 or 16 days is a full-time job. Expect three to four hours of class or its online equivalent plus several more hours of work every single day, weekends included. There is no room to fall behind and catch up; a student who disappears for a long weekend has missed the equivalent of two regular-semester weeks. It rewards a subject you can commit to completely for three weeks and punishes one you were hoping to coast through.

Faculty-led travel

Some of Porter's best courses are the January travel programs — a marketing course that studies supply chains in another country, a design course visiting studios and museums, a service-learning trip. You apply the previous spring or fall, pay a program fee on top of tuition that covers airfare, lodging, and ground costs, and complete pre-departure coursework and orientation before you leave. Financial aid and dedicated travel scholarships can offset the fee; apply early because the scholarship money is limited and the trips have enrollment caps.

Cost, aid and deadlines

Winter Term tuition is billed separately, per credit, and is not included in fall or spring full-time tuition — a three-credit course is a real additional charge. Financial aid treats Winter Term as attached to the spring term for eligibility, so whether aid helps depends on your spring enrollment and remaining limits; check with the aid office before you register. Every deadline is compressed: the add window is a day or two, the free-drop-with-no-record window is about the first two days, and the last day to withdraw with a "W" falls partway through the second week. Register during the fall, and read the specific date list, not the semester one.
