Becoming a campus tour guide

Representing Porter to prospective students and families, and how to join the team.

Home / Becoming a campus tour guide

What you get out of it

Public-speaking practice under low stakes, a deep knowledge of your own campus, and a job that's genuinely fun. Tour guides are often the first Porter people a family meets, so the role carries real responsibility and looks great on a résumé.

Training

New guides shadow experienced ones, learn the route and the stories, and get coached on handling the hard questions (cost, safety, what you'd change). You're encouraged to be honest — families trust a guide who names a trade-off.

In and around Porter Falls

Most families reach campus from the west on US 12 or by regional coach into the Depot District, and the Welcome Center at the Depot is where visits start.

The practical details

The job: Lead walking tours, work visit days and open houses, sometimes make calls or staff panels; paid hourly, flexible around classes. Who they want: Students who genuinely like Porter and can talk while walking backward — enthusiasm and reliability over a perfect GPA. Apply: Through Admissions, usually once or twice a year; an application, a group interview, and a practice tour segment. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Office of Admissions (Welcome Center at the Depot). Call (715) 555–0143 or email admissions@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
