Emergency procedures

What to do in a fire, severe weather, a lockdown, a medical emergency, or a power outage — before it happens.

Home / Emergency procedures

Get the alerts

Porter Alert sends urgent messages by text, email, and desktop notification for campus emergencies and weather closures. You are enrolled with your Porter contacts by default; add a mobile number and confirm it in MyPorter now, because the one time you need it is not the time to set it up.

Fire alarm

Every alarm is real until told otherwise. Leave immediately by the nearest exit, do not use elevators, take your keys and phone if they are right there but do not go back for anything, and go to your building's assembly point (away from the building, out of the way of responders). Do not re-enter until staff or the fire department clears it. Know two ways out of any room you spend time in.

Severe weather / tornado

On a tornado warning: move to the lowest level, to an interior room or hallway away from windows — building maps mark shelter areas. Stay there until the warning is lifted, not just until it looks calm. For winter storms, watch Porter Alert and the homepage for closures; if class is not cancelled, allow extra travel time.

Lockdown / threat on campus

If there is a violent threat: run if you can get away safely, hide if you cannot (lock or barricade the door, silence your phone, stay low and away from the door), and fight only as a last resort. Call 911 when it is safe to. Porter Alert will send instructions; follow them. The campus runs periodic briefings on this — go to one.

Medical emergency

Call 911 first for anything serious — chest pain, trouble breathing, severe bleeding, a head injury with confusion, a seizure, unconsciousness, a severe allergic reaction. Then call Campus Safety at (715) 555–0191 so they can direct responders and, if needed, bring an AED — locations are mapped on the emergency page. Do not move someone with a possible spine injury unless they are in immediate danger.

Power outage and other disruptions

Stay calm, use your phone as a light (not a candle), and check Porter Alert. Labs and shops have shutdown procedures — follow your instructor's. If you are stuck in an elevator, use the call button and wait; do not try to force the doors. For a gas smell, leave and call Campus Safety from outside.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
