Export control basics

When U.S. trade rules touch university research — usually they don't, but the exceptions matter.

Home / Export control basics

The fundamental research exemption

Most academic work is exempt because the results are meant to be openly published. Export control becomes relevant when a sponsor restricts publication or foreign-national participation, when the work involves specific listed technologies, or when you physically take equipment, samples, or technical data out of the country.

What to do

Flag any award term that limits who can work on a project or what can be published, before signing. Check with the Office of Research before hand-carrying a laptop with research data to certain countries, shipping hardware abroad, or hosting a visitor who needs access to controlled work. Most questions resolve quickly; a few need a license.

In and around Porter Falls

Research at Porter is applied and partner-driven: a Valley Health quality project, a DNR study on the Porter River, a manufacturing-process fix for a county employer. The Office of Research & Sponsored Programs handles the review and paperwork so the work can start on time.

The practical details

Usually fine: Fundamental research intended for publication, and information already in the public domain, are not restricted. Watch for: Certain technologies, encryption, controlled equipment, shipping items or data abroad, and travel to sanctioned countries. Ask first: A restricted funding clause, foreign-national access limits, or a request to keep results from being published. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (Millwright Hall, Room 340). Call (715) 555–0230 or email research@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
