Finding an on-campus job

Where campus jobs are posted, when to look, and what to expect from the work.

Home / Finding an on-campus job

How to land one

Apply early — the good schedules go in the first two weeks of a term. A short résumé and a sentence on why you want that job is plenty; many supervisors interview on the spot. Work-study eligibility helps for some roles but plenty of jobs don't require it.

What the work is like

On-campus supervisors expect reliability and are used to working around your class schedule, midterms, and breaks. Most first jobs are 8–12 hours a week. A job in your field — a research lab, the writing center, the help desk — doubles as experience and a future reference.

In and around Porter Falls

Career Services works with every major, but the pattern is the same across them: a required internship, co-op or clinical placement before graduation, listed on each program page. Ninety-six percent of Porter undergraduates complete one, most of them with an employer in the Valley or the Cities.

The practical details

Where: The student jobs board in Handshake, filtered to on-campus; new postings spike in August and January. Types: Dining, the library, front desks, labs, tutoring, tech support, offices, rec center, and department research or admin help. Pay: At least the campus student wage; some skilled roles (lab, IT, tutoring) pay more. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Career Services (Founders Union, Room 160). Call (715) 555–0205 or email careers@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
