About

Expressive activity on campus

Where and how anyone — students, employees, visitors — can demonstrate, leaflet, table or gather, and the few content-neutral rules that apply.

Home / Expressive activity on campus

The principle

Porter treats its outdoor common areas as available for speech, assembly and leafleting by anyone, with rules limited to time, place and manner — not viewpoint. You don't need a permit to stand on the quad with a sign or hand out flyers.

When something more is needed

Reserving a specific space and time so groups don't collide, amplified sound, tables and canopies, or an event large enough to need crowd management — those go through event registration. Counter-protest is protected too, as long as neither side prevents the other from being heard.

In and around Porter Falls

University Communications sits in Millwright Hall and handles the parts of Porter that outlast any one semester. The founding manual-training mission from 1893 is still the reference point for most of what this office says publicly.

The practical details

Open to all: The outdoor areas of campus are generally available for expressive activity without prior permission. Registration: Only for amplified sound, structures, large expected crowds, or a reserved time/space. Not allowed: Blocking building access or paths, disrupting classes, unattended structures, entering private offices. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is University Communications (Millwright Hall, Room 210). Call (715) 555–0250 or email news@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
