When it applies
An Incomplete is for a student who was on track to pass and then hit something real — illness, a death in the family, a hospitalisation — with only a piece of the course left. It is not an extension for falling behind, and an instructor isn't obligated to offer one.
The clock
The written agreement sets a deadline, usually within the next term. Miss it and the Incomplete lapses to the grade the completed work earns with the missing pieces counted as zero — often a low grade, so finishing early matters.

The practical details
