Training before access, every time
Every lab, shop and specialized studio — Founders Hall’s machine shop, the Applied Arts Building’s fabrication areas, health-sciences simulation spaces — requires specific safety training before a student gets independent access, whether that student is in the assigned course or working on an unrelated project.
What is provided, and what is required of you
Personal protective equipment specific to a space is provided at the point of use; closed-toe shoes and eye protection are a baseline requirement in every shop and machine area regardless of what the student is doing that day, visitors included.
Report it, even a near-miss
Any injury, exposure or near-miss is reported the same day, without exception, to the supervising instructor or lab manager; the point of reporting a near-miss is fixing the hazard before it becomes an actual injury, not assigning blame, and the policy is written that way on purpose.
The practical details
Required before lab access: Course- or space-specific safety training. PPE: Provided at point of use; closed-toe shoes required in shops. Incident reporting: Any injury or near-miss, no exceptions. These specifics can change from year to year, so confirm anything time-sensitive directly with the office below before you rely on it.
If you have a question
This is handled by Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (Millwright Hall, Room 340). Call (715) 555–0230 or email research@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
