Name, image & likeness (NIL)

What a Porter student-athlete can and can't do to earn money from their own name, image, and likeness.

Home / Name, image & likeness (NIL)

The basics

You may profit from your own name and likeness the way any student could — a business major can run a startup, a musician can sell recordings, and an athlete can sign an endorsement. What's still barred is being paid to play or to enroll, and trading on the university's trademarks or facilities without a license.

Do it right

Run any agreement past the compliance office before you sign — they check it against conference rules, state law, and school policy, and make sure it won't affect your eligibility or financial aid. Keep records; NIL income is taxable and can affect need-based aid calculations.

In and around Porter Falls

The Ironclads compete in NCAA Division III as members of the Wesconsin Collegiate Athletic Conference, and home events are at the Ironhouse Athletic Center and the riverside fields off North Campus. Millrace Week in October is still built around the homecoming football game.

The practical details

Allowed: Paid endorsements, autograph sessions, teaching lessons, monetized social media, and running a business — using your own NIL. Not allowed: Pay for playing or for choosing Porter, using university marks without permission, or deals in categories the school prohibits (e.g. gambling, alcohol). Report it: Disclose NIL agreements to the compliance office; some states and the conference require it. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Ironclad Athletics (Ironhouse Athletic Center). Call (715) 555–0195 or email athletics@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
