Health Sciences Opens a Full-Floor Simulation Hospital

Eight patient rooms, a control suite, and debriefing spaces let nursing and allied-health students practice complex scenarios before clinical placements.

The College of Health Sciences has opened a simulation hospital occupying a full floor of the Health Sciences Center: eight realistic patient rooms, a nurses’ station, a control suite behind one-way glass, and dedicated debriefing rooms. High-fidelity manikins can be programmed to deteriorate, respond to medication, and present the complications students will eventually see in a real hospital.

Simulation is now woven through every clinical course rather than treated as an add-on. A typical scenario runs fifteen minutes, followed by a forty-five-minute structured debrief — the part the faculty consider most important — where students review a video of their own performance.

“You want a student’s first time managing a crashing patient to be in a room where no one can actually be harmed, with a facilitator who can pause time and ask what they were thinking.”

— director of clinical simulation

The facility is shared with the dietetics, rehabilitation services, and health information management programs, and is available to regional hospital partners for continuing-education days.
