Permission numbers & overrides

The codes and approvals that let you register for a class the system would otherwise block.

Home / Permission numbers & overrides

How it works

A permission number (or an electronic override attached to your ID for that section) tells the registration system to let you past a specific barrier. It doesn't register you — you still add the class yourself before the deadline.

Getting one

Email the instructor with your name, student ID, and the exact section number, and say why you need in. For a prerequisite override, explain how you've met the material another way. Account holds (a library fine, an unmet health requirement, an advising flag) have to be cleared by the office that placed them — an instructor can't override those.

In and around Porter Falls

Curriculum decisions at Porter run through the departments that meet in Founders Hall and the Applied Arts Building, then to Faculty Senate, then to the Provost in Millwright Hall. The pace is deliberately slow and the review calendar is published.

The practical details

Common blocks: A closed section, a missing prerequisite, an instructor-consent flag, a reserved seat, a time conflict, or a hold on your account. Who issues one: Usually the instructor or the department office; a time-conflict override needs both instructors' sign-off. Use it fast: Overrides often expire at a date, and a held seat can be given away. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Office of the Provost (Millwright Hall, Room 300). Call (715) 555–0130 or email provost@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
