Riverfront Trail

The Riverfront Trail is Porter Falls’ signature linear park: 3.2 miles of paved, ADA-accessible path following both banks of the Porter River from Campus (Founders Hall) downstream to Depot Plaza. Segments: Campus Reach (0.6 mi, Founders Hall to Millrace bridge, lit, plowed first in winter), Millrace Loop (1.2 mi, crosses the Millrace on the historic pedestrian bridge, interpretive signs on industrial history), Depot Reach (1.4 mi, wooded, connects to Riverside Park and Depot District). Amenities: 12 bike-repair stations (air, tools), 8 water fountains (bottle-filler + pet bowl), 6 restroom pods (seasonal April–Oct), 15 benches, 3 picnic shelters (reservable via City Hall). Usage: 1,200+ trips/day (Strava heatmap), peak 5–7 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. weekends. Winter: Plowed by 5 a.m. (city priority); fat-bike grooming on parallel unpaved track (Dec–Mar).

Ecology: 5-acre restored floodplain forest (2023–25 planting, 3,200 natives), pollinator meadow (2 acres, mowed once/year), beaver dam analogues (BDAs) on side channel (installed 2024, monitored by EnvSci). Millrace Corridor

The Millrace (1,800-ft artificial channel, dug 1856) runs from the Porter River above the falls, through the Foundry Coworking basement (visible through viewing window), under Main Street, and rejoins the river at Depot Plaza. Public access: Foundry Viewing Window (Main St., interpretive panel on mill history), Millrace Bridge (pedestrian, connects Riverfront Trail loop), Depot Plaza Overlook (waterfall view, seating). Recreation: Tubing the Millrace (summer, put-in at Foundry, take-out at Depot Plaza, 40-min float, Outdoor Pursuits shuttle $5/hr). Ecology: Millrace Fish Passage (completed 2024, roughened channel, 47 brook trout passed spring 2025). Art: Current Sculpture (rotating, juried by Fine Art faculty, illuminated at night).
