Repeating a course

How a repeated course affects your GPA and transcript, and the limits on doing it.

Home / Repeating a course

How grade replacement works

Retake the course at Porter, and the Registrar flags the first attempt so only the second grade counts toward your cumulative GPA. The first attempt still appears on the transcript with an 'R' notation — nothing is erased, but it stops dragging your average.

Watch the edges

Beyond the policy limit, both grades count. A course you already passed can usually be repeated once with aid; a third attempt at anything is often paid out of pocket and needs a petition. Some professional and graduate programs recalculate using all attempts regardless of Porter's policy.

In and around Porter Falls

Curriculum decisions at Porter run through the departments that meet in Founders Hall and the Applied Arts Building, then to Faculty Senate, then to the Provost in Millwright Hall. The pace is deliberately slow and the review calendar is published.

The practical details

GPA: Porter's repeat policy replaces the original grade in the GPA with the newer one (both stay visible on the transcript), for a limited number of repeats. Limits: Usually you may repeat a given course once under the grade-replacement policy, and only a few courses total across the degree. Financial aid: Aid pays for one repeat of a previously passed course; repeated failures can affect your satisfactory-progress standing. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Office of the Provost (Millwright Hall, Room 300). Call (715) 555–0130 or email provost@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
