About the job
The Forge Recreation Center hires several hundred students a year, and facility attendants are the largest single group. Attendants are the people at the entry desk, on the strength-and-cardio floor, and in the gym when a court needs to be set up for an intramural game. We have four openings, mostly opening and late-evening shifts.
You do not need to be an athlete. You do need to be awake at 5:45 a.m. if you take an opening shift, and you need to be willing to tell someone, politely, to re-rack their plates. Professional staff are in the building for every shift, so you are never the last line of anything.
What you’ll do
- Scan Porter Cards at the entry desk, sell guest day passes, and check out towels, balls, and day-use locker keys.
- Record hourly headcounts for the weight floor and cardio deck so the PorterRec app shows live numbers.
- Walk the floors every 30 minutes: wipe equipment, re-rack weights, and report anything broken.
- Set up and take down courts and nets for intramural games and sport-club practices.
- Respond to injuries and emergencies under the center’s procedures until professional staff or responders arrive.
What we’re looking for
- Any enrolled student; no work-study award needed.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or willingness to earn it within your first 30 days. Campus Recreation runs the class and pays for it.
- A calm voice for the moment the fire alarm goes off during a spin class.
- Availability for at least one weekend shift a month.
Schedule and pay
Shifts are four hours: 5:45–9:45 a.m., two midday blocks, and 7–11 p.m. on weekdays; weekend shifts follow the 9 a.m.–9 p.m. weekend hours. Attendants who stay through finals week get first pick of the winter-break schedule, when the center runs reduced hours and the 40-hour break limit applies.
Campus jobs are capped at 20 hours a week combined while classes are in session and 40 over breaks (see hour limits); for F-1 students the 20 is firm. Pay is biweekly by direct deposit; log every shift in the payroll system so your supervisor can approve it before the cutoff.
How to apply
Apply in PorterConnect, the student employment portal in MyPorter, under job number SJ-26-1112. Upload your class schedule and note which shift blocks you can cover; a résumé is optional. Group interviews run October 21–22 in the second-floor multipurpose studio.
Apply by October 19, 2026. Questions about the job go to Tamsin Glasoe, Facility Operations Coordinator, Campus Recreation, at glasoet@uwporterfalls.edu or (715) 555–0163. Once hired, you complete an I-9 in person and a W-4 before your first shift; plan on a pay period or two before the first check arrives.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. This student job posting is invented: there is no entry desk, headcount app, no paycheck, and no hiring supervisor (Tamsin Glasoe does not exist), and applications sent anywhere go nowhere.
