How the year is built
Porter runs two 15-week semesters plus a final-exam week, with an optional three-week Winter Term in January and layered summer sessions. Fall 2026: residence halls open August 30, classes begin September 2, fall break is October 15–16, Thanksgiving recess is November 25–29, classes end December 11, and final examinations run December 14–18. Spring 2027: classes begin January 25, spring recess is March 13–21, classes end May 7, finals run May 10–14, and commencement is May 15.
Winter Term 2027 meets January 4–22 — one intensive course only. Summer 2027 offers an eight-week session from June 7, plus four-week sessions starting June 7 and July 6; the university is closed July 5. Every date on this page is fictional and set for the parody; the live version is published in MyPorter and syncs to your calendar app.
The deadlines that actually matter
Most students only think about the first and last day of class, but the money and the transcript ride on the dates in between. The add deadline is the end of the first week; the drop-without-record deadline is the end of the second week (a course dropped by then never appears on your transcript). The tuition-refund schedule steps down fast after that — 100% through week two, 50% through week four, nothing after — so a late schedule change can leave you owing for a class you are not taking.
The withdrawal deadline, around week ten, is the last day to leave a course with a "W" instead of the grade you have earned. Graduation-application, financial-aid-verification, and residency-reclassification deadlines all key off the term start date and are listed on the same calendar.
Using it to plan a term
Before you register, put the break weeks, the withdrawal deadline, and your finals block on your own calendar — students routinely book travel over a reading day or a final. If a course is offered in a compressed format (Winter Term, a four-week summer session, a seven-week half-semester block), every one of these deadlines compresses with it: the drop-without-record window on a three-week course can be two days.
Religious-observance, military-duty, and documented-emergency accommodations are handled through your instructor and the Dean of Students, not by moving the calendar; raise them in the first two weeks when you can see a conflict coming.
When the calendar changes
Weather closures, campus emergencies, and the occasional state-holiday shift can move a date after publication. Changes are pushed through the MyPorter alert you set up at orientation and posted on the registrar's page; instructors decide how missed class time is made up within university policy.
The calendar for the following year is approved by the Faculty Senate and posted roughly 14 months ahead, so you can plan a co-op, a lease, or a study-abroad term against real dates.
