Two separate processes
Admission as a transfer student and eligibility to compete are handled separately and on different timelines. Apply and get admitted the same way any transfer student does — through Admissions, on transcripts and credits, with no athletics component. Athletic eligibility is then certified separately by the athletics compliance office once you are admitted and have declared intent to try out or join a roster.
Eligibility basics
NCAA Division III does not use a national transfer portal the way Division I does; there is no registration window or automatic release process. A transferring student-athlete has four seasons of competition within a set number of years from first full-time enrollment, and time already used at a prior school generally counts against that clock. Depending on the sport and how much you competed at your previous school, there may be a residency period before you are eligible to compete for Porter — the compliance office determines this from your transcript and prior athletics participation record, not from anything you self-report informally.
Talking to a coach
You can and should talk to a Porter coaching staff before you formally apply — that conversation is not restricted by transfer-portal rules that apply at the Division I level. Coaches can tell you realistically whether there's a roster spot and playing-time opportunity in your position or event; they cannot promise admission, which is decided independently by Admissions, or guarantee eligibility, which is decided independently by compliance.
Credits and academic standing
Your academic transfer credit evaluation happens the same way as for any transfer student — see the transfer credit preview tool for a rough estimate before you apply. Because there are no athletic scholarships in Division III, financial aid is evaluated purely on the same need- and merit-based basis as any other transfer applicant; ask financial aid about a transfer scholarship rather than assuming athletics factors into the offer.
