Renata Vasquez

Background

Renata Vasquez is on the faculty of the Department of Communication & Media and holds a doctoral clinical degree from the University of Washington and is licensed to practice. Before Porter, Renata taught writing and edited a regional magazine.

Renata brings that practice into the classroom, teaching from real cases and current standards in rhetoric and persuasion and information design.

Teaching

Renata regularly teaches courses in Communication Studies, Professional & Technical Communication, English. Specific sections and syllabi are listed in the class schedule each term.

Class time is built around cases and real deliverables. Students work to professional standards, present to a critique or a client-style panel, and revise. Renata keeps the connection to current practice explicit.

Advising and office hours

Renata advises students in the Communication & Media programs and holds weekly office hours during the fall and spring terms, posted on the office door and in the course pages. Prospective students are welcome to email to arrange a visit or a call.

Advising conversations usually cover course sequencing, whether to add a minor or a concentration, and how classroom work connects to internships, research, or graduate study. Students who are undecided are welcome; part of the job is helping them narrow things down.

Recent and representative work

Renata stays active in practice alongside teaching, through consulting, standards work, and applied projects in rhetoric and persuasion and information design. Representative items:

• Service on a standards, licensing, or advisory body related to rhetoric and persuasion.
