Venture advisors: your weekly 1-on-1

Four full-time Venture Advisors (staff, not faculty) each carry a portfolio of 15–20 ventures. Backgrounds: SaaS founder (exited to public co.), Med-tech PM (FDA Class II), Consumer hardware (Kickstarter → retail), Marketplace/nonprofit hybrid. Cadence: 30-min weekly standup (metrics, blockers, next actions) + 60-min monthly deep dive (strategy, fundraising, hiring, founder psychology). Tools: Shared Notion workspace (metrics dashboard, milestone tracker, doc library), Loom for async updates, Slack connect for daily questions. Advisor scope: They don’t write code or make sales calls — they ask the right questions, introduce the right people, and keep you honest on milestones. Reassignment: If fit isn’t there, request a switch (happens ~10% of cases, no stigma).

Industry mentor matching

Mentor Network: 120+ alumni and regional professionals (med-tech, fintech, ed-tech, climate, consumer, industrials, nonprofit). Matching: At onboarding, founders complete a Mentor Fit Survey (domain, stage, personality, communication style). Director matches within 1 week — intro email with context, suggested first-meeting agenda. Commitment: Mentors sign a Mentor Compact (1 hr/month for 6 months, renewable, no equity, no investment obligation, confidentiality). Structure: First meeting: “Where are you stuck?” Subsequent: founder sends 1-pager update 24 hrs before; mentor brings pattern-matching from their experience. Specialist pool: For deep technical/regulatory questions (FDA, SOC2, hardware DFM, grant writing), advisors tap a Specialist Pool (paid honorarium $200/hr, university-funded) — founders don’t pay.

Peer cohorts and accountability

Discovery Cohort (pre-incubator, 8 weeks, 12 teams): Weekly 90-min session (workshop + breakout), facilitated by an Advisor. Topics: problem interviews, landing-page test, wizard-of-oz prototype, pricing survey, founder agreement basics. Output: Validation Brief (ready for micro-grant application). Incubator Cohort (Student Venture Incubator, 12 weeks, 8–12 teams): Tuesday standups (3 min each: metric, blocker, ask), Friday demo/feedback (20 min each, rotating external reviewer). Seed Cohort (Student Venture Fund recipients): Biweekly 60-min board-style review (metrics, runway, hiring, board prep). Alumni Cohort (graduated founders): Monthly dinner (first Thursday, rotating host), annual Founders Homecoming (fall, 2 days: workshops, investor panels, reunion). Slack: #founders-general (800+ members), #incubator-current, #seed-current, #alumni-founders — active, searchable, self-moderating.

Alumni Angel Syndicate

Informal network of 28 alumni (founders, operators, VCs) who opt in to see every Seed Fund deal. Process: Fund Director sends deal memo (1-pager + deck + data room link) → angels have 10 days to commit ($5K–$50K each, syndicate lead negotiates pro-rata). Terms: Same SAFE/note as Fund (no side letters). Track record: 60% participation rate on Seed deals; 3 portfolio companies have raised Series A with Syndicate members leading or co-leading. No carry, no fees — purely alumni paying it forward. Founder benefit: One data room, one process, multiple checks — closes in 3 weeks vs. 3 months.

Discovery workshops

Weekly, free, no application: Mondays 4–5:30 p.m., Forge Innovation Hub Classroom. Rotating curriculum (8-week cycle):

  1. Problem Interviewing (script, recruiting, synthesis)
  2. Landing Page in an Hour (Carrd, Webflow, analytics)
  3. Wizard-of-Oz Prototyping (no-code, manual backend)
  4. Customer Journey Mapping (jobs-to-be-done, switching costs)
  5. Pricing Discovery (Van Westendorp, conjoint-lite, pilot design)
  6. Founder Agreement Basics (equity split, vesting, IP, decision rights)
  7. Metrics That Matter (leading vs. lagging, cohort analysis, unit economics)
  8. Pitch Deck Anatomy (story, traction, ask, appendix)
Attend any 6/8 → Discovery Certificate (digital badge, LinkedIn-ready). Workshops are the typical entry point for students who “have an interest but no idea yet.”

How to get started

Step 1: Attend a Discovery Workshop (Monday 4 p.m., no RSVP). Step 2: Apply for a Validation Micro-Grant (Form A, 15 min) — this unlocks a Venture Advisor. Step 3: Advisor matches you with an Industry Mentor and places you in the next Discovery Cohort. Step 4: Execute your validation experiment, submit Learning Report. Step 5: If traction, apply to Incubator (space + coaching + cohort) and/or Seed Fund (capital + board-style governance). No gatekeepers: You can enter at any step; the system is designed to meet you where you are. Contact: innovation@uwporterfalls.edu or drop into Forge Innovation Hub 140 (Mon–Fri 9–5).
